Almost 50% of vaccines administered worldwide have been in Europe and North America.
Poorer countries have vaccinated less than 1%of their populations.1
Lower-income countries have long been dealing with global health inequalities, such as ill-equipped healthcare systems, inaccessibility of medications and vaccines, and higher mortality rates for curable and preventable diseases.
The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened these inequalities.
In Africa alone, only 2.5% of the 6.4 billion vaccine doses administered globally have been given in the continent. Yet, they make up over 17% of the world’s population.2 Not to mention, many countries are still waiting for their first set of vaccine shipments. Once received they will also need medical resources to properly roll out the vaccinations. This includes personal protective equipment, mobile clinics, and public education.3
Vaccine inequity is the world’s biggest obstacle to ending this pandemic and recovering from COVID-19.
—Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization
