HELP END INEQUALITIES FACED BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Curated By:

Wanda Brascoupé, Bear Clan, Kanien’keha, Skarù Rę’, and Anishinabe

THERE ARE Over 600 FIRST NATIONS COMMUNITIES IN CANADA. 1 IN 5 LACK ACCESS TO SAFE DRINKING WATER.1

Indigenous Peoples are the fastest growing population in Canada. They represent nearly 5% of the entire Canadian population. Systemic discrimination, harmful government policies, and racism have created historic and modern injustices and inequalities, including long-term drinking water advisories, unequal access to healthcare and education, mental health crises for young people, and economic inequality.1,2,3,4

The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified these issues, making it harder for Indigenous Peoples to access critical services and resources.

Funding INDIGENOUS INGENUITY

Indigenous ingenuity and brilliance within Indigenous-led organizations is challenging the status quo and leading the way on tackling these critical issues. While they work tirelessly with limited resources, these organizations create real change and address the most pressing issues.

Indigenous-led organizations help heal the physical and emotional traumas of colonialism, the Indian Act, and Residential Schools. They are essential in rebuilding traditional culture and language that was passed from generation-to-generation but lost or damaged from government-led assimilation practices. Additionally, they offer services and support founded in Indigenous knowledge, which uplifts an emerging generation of leaders.

Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Fund - quote-purple

The average story shared about Indigenous communities is that they are deficient somehow; this is furthest from the truth. The only deficiency is the surrounding system that limits what is capable. Indigenous-led organizations show up daily across this land to do necessary and needed work that allows those they serve to seed, grow and thrive no matter the circumstance.

ABOUT the INDIGENOUS PEOPLES SOLIDARITY FUND

This Fund includes more than 50 Indigenous-led charities from across Canada whose focus ranges from social services to arts and culture. These charities have identified themselves as Indigenous-led based on four criteria:

  • Indigenous leadership at all levels – board & executive
  • Indigenous cultures & languages central to daily operations
  • Formal protocols with Indigenous communities
  • Programs delivered by Indigenous People

These criteria were originally established by Indigenous peoples working in the charitable sector advised by Elders. Since not every organization will meet all four criteria depending on their structure, inclusion is heavily weighted towards Indigenous leadership at all levels and Indigenous cultures & languages central to daily operations.

To ensure donations reach charities easily and efficiently, charities in this Fund must also be one of the more than 20,000 charities registered to receive funds electronically from CanadaHelps. Funds will be transferred quarterly, subject to a minimum of $10 per charity.

We regularly update the list of charities in this Fund. To see the latest list of charities included in this Fund, you can view the list here.
